MACON, Ga. - Wesleyan College hockey continued its strong start to its inaugural season this weekend, earning a pair of 6-3 victories over the University of Alabama to complete the first series sweep in program history.
The Wolves controlled much of the action throughout the two-game set, outshooting Alabama 94-54 across the weekend and receiving offensive contributions throughout the lineup.
Wesleyan opened the series Saturday with a 6-3 victory.
Jordan Clark started the scoring in the first period off an assist from
Oriana Weidman before
Tara Herne and
Skylar Penfold added second-period goals.
With the game tied at three entering the third, the Wolves took control. Herne put Wesleyan back in front with a power-play goal assisted by
Ava Hartman before Hartman scored twice in a span of less than two minutes to put the game away.
Herne finished Saturday with two goals and two assists, while Hartman added two goals and an assist. Wesleyan held a commanding 52-33 advantage in shots.
The Wolves carried that momentum into Sunday's series finale and wasted little time taking control.
In goal, Katelyn Silbernagel provided a steady presence for the Wolves, turning away 30 of Alabama's 33 shots to help Wesleyan secure the series-opening victory.
After falling behind early, Wesleyan answered with four goals in the opening period. Penfold scored twice, Herne added another and Clark converted on the power play to send the Wolves into the first intermission with a 4-1 advantage.
Clark added her second goal of the afternoon in the second period before
Brooke Hankinson scored early in the third to extend the lead to 6-1. Wesleyan finished the contest with a 42-21 advantage in shots on goal.
Silbernagel again handled the work in net, recording 18 saves to complete the sweep. Across the two-game series, she stopped 48 of 54 shots faced while allowing just six goals.
Clark led the offensive effort Sunday with two goals and two assists, while Penfold scored twice. Across the two-game series, Clark recorded five points, while Herne finished the weekend with three goals and two assists.
The pair of victories gives Wesleyan three consecutive official wins after the Wolves earned the first win in program history Friday night against the University of Georgia. The 3-0 start to the season puts the Wolves at the top of the pack in the CHS Women's division edging out 3-0 Auburn by a +2 goal differential.Â
The Wolves will have a well deserved rest before they travel to Columbus Ga to take on the University of South Carolina as well as the University of Tennessee in the Columbus Classic starting Friday October 9th at 8:45PM
