MACON, Ga. - Wesleyan College hockey made history Friday night, scoring three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat Georgia 4-2 at the Macon Coliseum. The victory marks the program's first official win in its inaugural season.
Tara Herne scored twice to lead the Wolves, while Ava Hartman and Jordan Clark each added a goal. Katelyn Silbernagel anchored Wesleyan in net, making 23 saves and holding Georgia scoreless over the final 20 minutes.
After a scoreless opening period, Georgia struck twice early in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Wesleyan responded with 10:15 remaining in the period when Herne scored unassisted, cutting the deficit in half and putting the Wolves within reach heading into the third.
Wesleyan wasted little time drawing even. Just 45 seconds into the final period, Hartman finished off an assist from Keeleigh Bott to tie the game at 2-2.
The score remained tied until Clark delivered the game-winning goal with 2:23 remaining, converting an assist from Oriana Weidman to give Wesleyan its first lead of the night. Herne added her second goal as time expired to complete the comeback.
The Wolves finished with a 40-25 advantage in shots, outshooting Georgia in all three periods. Silbernagel stopped all seven shots she faced in the third to help secure the milestone victory.
For head coach Caleb Cameron and the Wolves, Friday's win adds a defining moment to the program's opening season, a comeback on home ice and the first official victory in Wesleyan hockey history.
The Wolves are back in action tomorrow as they take on the University of Alabama at 7:00pm.
