Wesleyan College Head Women's Wrestling Coach Ruben Chavez Selected as Visiting Coach for Team USA Wrestling Training Camp With Ukrainian National Team.
Macon, GA - Wesleyan College is proud to announce that Head Women's Wrestling Coach Ruben Chavez has been selected as a Visiting Coach for Team USA Wrestling, earning the opportunity to train with and coach the United States Women's National Teams during a prestigious two-week international training camp from December 7th–20th in Iowa City and Coralville, Iowa.
Hosted in partnership by the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, the Iowa Women's Wrestling Club, and the University of Iowa, this elite training camp will bring together Team USA and the Ukrainian Women's Wrestling Federation for high-level international preparation. The camp will include a highly anticipated USA vs. Ukraine "Friendly" dual meet on December 18th at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Coach Chavez will work alongside national team staff and world-class athletes, gaining firsthand experience in elite international training environments while contributing to the development of Team USA athletes. Ukraine will bring a powerhouse lineup featuring world, Olympic, and European medalists, making this one of the most competitive international training camps hosted on U.S. soil this year.
Coach Chavez brings more than 21 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school, club, collegiate, and national levels. As Head Coach at Wesleyan College, he aims to build a competitive women's wrestling program grounded in discipline, character, and athletic excellence.
"I am extremely grateful and honored for the opportunity to represent Wesleyan College on the national stage," said Chavez. "With Wesleyan not competing until next year, this is the first time since 2011 that I haven't had a team to focus on during the season. I sent USA Women's Wrestling Freestyle National Coach Terry Steiner an email in October. A few days later called me and gave me the great news that I would be a visiting team USA coach!"
"Training and coaching alongside Team USA and international champions from Ukraine is an invaluable experience that I will bring directly back to our student-athletes here in Macon. Ukraine brings a very stacked team full of world medalists! They are so tough, what a great experience to work with them! I'm honored to be able to share my knowledge with these elite athletes during the training camp while also learning from them and growing as a coach!"
Wesleyan College Women's Wrestling continues to grow as a rising program in the Southeast, and Coach Chavez's selection further underscores the program's expanding reputation at the national and international levels.
