Jackson, Miss. - Seven freshmen made their collegiate debut, led by Valerie Clower who picked up a pair of hits, as Wesleyan dropped a doubleheader at Millsaps 10-2 and 2-0.
""We didn't play too well in the first game today. A two-out error led to six runs,"" remarked Wesleyan College head coach Dicky Hightower. ""We just didn't hit the ball real well and made some errors that hurt us. However, I thought Mellissa Webb pitched outstanding in the second game, and I'm encouraged because everything that went wrong today are things that we can correct. You can really tell that we are moving in the right direction.""
In the opener, the Wolves fell behind early but battled back to within three runs in the top of the fifth inning as Victoria Clower and Jema Bravo used back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Majors' lead down to 5-2. However, Millsaps took advantage of a wild pitch and an error to push the lead back out to the final margin of 10-2.
In the nightcap, a pitchers duel broke out as Wesleyan's Melissa Webb and Millsaps' Danielle Faucheux each tossed scoreless innings until the Majors broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sarah Scales delived a two-run single to put Millsaps up for good.
The Wolves open a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 17, when they host Piedmont College in a doubleheader. First pitch at the Mathews Athletic Complex is slated for 2:00pm.
