Macon, Ga. - Wesleyan College soccer used a pair of second-half goals and a strong defensive performance to earn a 2-0 road victory over Toccoa Falls College on Thursday evening.
The Wolves controlled much of the action throughout the match, finishing with a 17-5 advantage in total shots and putting consistent pressure on the Toccoa Falls defense. Wesleyan fired nine shots in the opening 45 minutes but entered halftime locked in a scoreless tie.
Wesleyan finally broke through in the 72nd minute.
Fernanda Perez found the back of the net at the 71:44 mark off an assist from
Louden Busbee, giving the Wolves the 1-0 advantage. The goal proved to be the game-winner.
The Wolves added some insurance late in the contest. With just under six minutes remaining, Busbee moved from facilitator to scorer, finishing a chance created by
Skylar Benko at the 84:05 mark to extend Wesleyan's lead to 2-0. Busbee finished the night with a goal and an assist, while Benko added an assist and two shots on goal.
Wesleyan's attack remained active throughout the evening.
Caleigh Patton recorded three shots, all on goal, while
Jada Vance put both of her attempts on frame. Perez also placed both of her shots on goal as the Wolves finished with 12 shots on target as a team.
On the other end of the field, Wesleyan's defense kept Toccoa Falls off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes. Goalkeeper
Brooke Hankinson earned the victory and the shutout, recording two saves in a complete-game effort.
The Wolves also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, including four corners in the second half, as they continued to apply pressure before eventually breaking through with the two late goals.
Wesleyan will look to carry the momentum from the road victory into its next contest Sunday on campus at Panoz Field starting at 11:00am.
