Macon, GA - Mellissa Webb earned her third victory of the season in leading Wesleyan to a 9-4 win over NAIA foe Truett McConnell College on Tuesday afternoon at the Mathews Athletic Complex. The Lady Bears would come back to win the second game of the doubleheader 6-0.
The Wolves (7-11) jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning, and held the Lady Bears scoreless until the sixth inning. Truett McConnell scored all four of their runs in the sixth on four hits and a Wesleyan error.
Webb tallied nine strikeouts and no walks in the seven inning contest, giving up only five hits and two earned runs.
Center fielder Tiffani Linville led the Wolves offense, going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and a run batted in.
Truett McConnell's Harlee Grogan would stifle the Wolves offense in Game 2, holding Wesleyan to only three hits and allowing no runs. The Lady Bears piled up 12 hits on their way to a 6-0 seven inning win.
""Overall, we had a pretty good day,"" remarked Wesleyan head coach Dickey Hightower. ""It's always good to get a split with an NAIA program, and Truett McConnell has been playing some good ball so far this season, so I'm proud of us for getting that win. Mellissa Webb pitched a good ball game for us once again, and I thought we played well in the first game. We just didn't hit the ball well in the second game and never could get anything going, but overall, I was pleased with our performance today.""
Wesleyan returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Rust College for a dobuleheader.
