Macon, GA - Wesleyan outlasted Agnes Scott in a nine inning marathon on the diamond on Friday evening, defeating the Scotties 3-2 in exciting fashion.
Wesleyan got on the scoreboard first when Mellissa Webb singled and scored Jema Bravo in the second inning. Agnes Scott responded in the top of the third on a Cat Riale single, and the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the top on the ninth inning. Agnes Scott's Aimee Jennings blasted a home run over the left field fence to give the Scotties the lead, but Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the inning.
Valerie Clower singled to start the ninth and sister Victoria followed that up with a walk. Bravo reached base on a fielder's choice, moving pinch runner Nicole Wilson to third. Wilson would go on to score on a wind pitch during Mellissa Webb's at bat, tying the game. Webb would follow that with a single that scored Bravo, sealing the win for the the Wolves.
""I'm really pleased with how we played tonight and with how we fought back to win our first game,"" remarked Wesleyan head coach Dickey Hightower. ""Mellissa Webb pitched an excellent game and our team never gave up. We battled through some long at bats, fouling off multiple balls and staying alive during our most critical plate appearances. This was a big win for our team.""
Agnes Scott bounced back to win Game 2 of the doubleheader, 8-0. A six-run second inning put the Wolves behind the eight ball and they were never able to string together enough hits to push runs across the plate. Wesleyan stranded 11 runners on base during the game.
The Wolves return to the diamond on short rest, facing Rust College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 and 3:00 at the Mathews Athletic Complex.
