Macon, GA - The Wesleyan College softball team opened its season on Sunday afternoon against Elmira College out of Elmira, New York, dropping both games of the doubleheader to the visiting Eagles.
In the first game of the day, the Pioneers struggled to find an offensive rhythm, picking up only one hit in the game on a single by junior Anna Jones. Elmira's Alex Piqlisi earned her first win of the season after striking out 13 batters, while Wesleyan's Morgan Cramer took the loss for the Pioneers.
In the day's second game, the Pioneers spotted the Eagles 10 runs in the first inning but managed to settle down as the game progressed and played even with Elmira for the remainder of the game. Wesleyan's Elly Tilk got things started in the right direction offensively for Wesleyan in the third inning when she reached base on a walk. Sara McMahon then reached base after a solid hit to the short stop was dropped, advancing Tilk to second. Anna Jones came to the plate next and reached on a fielder's choice, setting up Aisha Coles for her double that drove in the first two Pioneer runs of the game. In the fifth inning, McMahon tripled then scored on a solid hit by Colleen DeGraff.
Elmira's Katie Hobson earned her first win for the Eagles, while McMahon took the loss for the Pioneers.
Wesleyan will host Clark-Atlanta University on Tuesday at the Mathews Athletic Complex. The first pitch for the doubleheader is set for 5:00pm.
